All modern nation-states without exception have destroyed their indigenous populations or reduced them to subaltern status, though they are not for that reason to be considered all morally equivalent: chipping away at a people's culture economically is not the same as banning their native language, which in turn is not the same as rounding them up and sending them to camps. Uti possidetis: the people who matter for self-determination are the present generations living in the Oblast. Whether they choose independence, continued union with Russia, or union with another nation-state is solely their own business, provided they do not constitute a threat to the peace — which they do not.

I am German, too and I think more or less the same. It is really a shame that the old Prussian language has disappeared, but I think, that nobody, who speaks Russian, would change his language into an old, grammatically even more complicated language of a small people living in former times. Otherwise we would choose Latin for the official language of the European Union.

The German population would not like to pay for the integration of one more former communist country. I even think, that a majority of West-Germans would have voted against the Unity of Germany, if they had known, how much it would cost.

So, what also seems the best to me is an independent Russian speaking country, which could be called "Königsberg" (St. Peterburg is also a German name), which can be integrated into the European Union just as its neighbours Poland and Lithuania.

Some years ago I travelled to Klaipeda and Nida in Lithuania. We travelled two days by car from Braunschweig and we did not even leave the German borders of 1914. So we stayed all the time within this gigantic German Empire from the times before World War I. I was a bit melancholic, when I got conscious of how much land Germany lost because of both wars.

But in the end I came to the following conclusion: Today it does not really matter, to which country all this land belongs, because we live in the European Union. we can cross the border without a visa, even without any control. We can always go there, we can even work there if we want, we can buy a farm or a house, and in some years all countries will pay with the Euro and most people will speak English more or less. This would also be a good perspective for a Russian-speaking country "Königsberg".

I am German and I know some people from the current "Kaliningrad oblast". It seems to be that not many people here have an interest in returning the area to Germany (the absorption of East Germany was difficult enough).

Instead, I think that original inhabitants or their descendants - both Germans and Lithuanians - who want to return should be allowed to, and the current settlers (who are not only Russians, but people from all over the former USSR) should receive some kind of self-determination within the EU.

No one there seems to be seriously interested in reviving the Baltic Prussian language, but many have learnt German, so I think that a Russian/German bilingualism might be what most of the people there want. They also usually call the city "Kenig".

But especially, they want to handle their own affairs, instead of being oppressed by Moscow, who is taking arbitrary decisions for the area without asking the population. And they want open borders with Lithuania and Poland.

it should belong to Germany;it was wrongfully stolen from Germany and should be given back, once it is back in German hands you will see how quick it would be restored to its former glory because most Germans truly care about East Prussia and its capital Königsberg

I believe it should belong to Lithuania. Maybe Germany should have rights there too. But Prussians always were close to both Germans and Lithuanians and Lithuania almost got Tilsit back in 1920s however Polish people didn't liked this idea.....

It would be nice if Königsberg could be rebuilt to how it was before the wars. This city had such a beautiful history of people and buildings. It was a beacon of Prussia and Eastern Europe. Whether it be administered by Russia, Germany, Lithuania or Poland it does not matter – as long as it is rebuilt to its previous splendor and allow people with roots and a love of this land be allowed to live there once more. Let its people (both past and present) determine its fate. Not the expansionist policies of the old U.S.S.R.

Even though, Russia return the crushed province to Germany, Russia will never clean thier criminal hands. after I read the barbaric acts of the Red Army, I realize that there is not moral in Russia to talk about thier rights to hold this GERMAN territory.
